I was told the other day that Qlogic is changing the licensing again and you dont have to license the entire switch to use the 10GB uplink ports. The HOWEVER in this one is that you do have to have the management software in order to do this at an added cost. Additionally I was told the reason that they had to split the software from hardware was due to SOX regulations. It seems that they are pricing the switches competitve when you factor in the added cost of software.

Does anyone know anything about this?

What did Qlogic have to say when you made the comment on the database back end for trending? This seems to be a feature that is missing in almost every storage package in mid range.

I was playing with the Sun 9990V (USP) .. this has the option to see the HBA's --> Virt Env --> Storage

Its amazing that we cant quite find a product that will work for trending storage ... amazing that we have about 500+ solid products for IP that add solid value.

They have a solid product - let me know if you hear anything on the database back end .. that could really open up the performance tuning.

Port trunking

By the way - found that SanBoxes can do aduptive port trunking (basicly like load balancing accross multiple links). In W3i case we could have used it for each IPStor controller - instead of doing roud-robin where we manually load balanced LUNs. It would have used all of them by sending frames accross all three of them.

As far as database end - I am not sure if QLogic will address it any time soon. From the products that I tested NetWisdom and Sanscreen looked the best.

What about the HBA's?

Is this used to trunk between switches or can it also be used on the host side without the use of the Qlogic mulitpathing that sometimes does not work with the application at hand. I think that application/host side often needs a driver for mulitpathing as the host needs to know how to use the ports.

I know in the past I have configured this to trunk between switches from bladecenters to the core switches.

Cool - I will have to look at it again, thanks for bringing it up. I know in the days of the old Mcdata switches this was an added expense *key file* (if I remember right).

QLOgic switches and EFS 2007

QLOgic introduced a feature that is called mPort. It allows you to move a license from one port to another on not fully licensed switches. The caveat is that you need to have a Enterprise Fabric Suite 2007 to do so. List price is 10, 000 but the good news is you can get it for the quarter of that price through your sales rep. QLogic also droped pricing on their 5000 series switches by introducing 5602Q models. They are cheaper that regular ones but require EFM 2007.

If you want EFS, just get a 9000 series switch and it will give you a SITE license to use it everywhere.

I was on a QLOgic training recently and told then if they want to push EFS 2007 as a usable product, they better attached a database to it for histrical data and allow run monitoring as a service.
